– EMILY’S APARTMENT –
SCENE 8
After a short bus ride back to Woodbridge Island The Tourist makes his way up Loxton Road to Emily’s apartment. He enters the old retro building and heads towards an old service type elevator. He presses the “up” button and waits for the elevator to arrive. As he enters the lift and makes his way to the third floor, he feels nervous and notices his palms are sweaty. He wipes his hands on his pants as he arrives at Emily’s floor. The doors open with a loud clanking noise. ….
He finds Emily’s apartment, number 13, rings the bell and waits in anticipation. He hears the swoosh swoosh sound of wheels on a wooden floor and then a crashing sound as Emily bangs up against the front door. She is still wearing her roller skates and fails to stop in time as she rushes for the door.
“Hi. Hi. Come in” says Emily quite eagerly as she opens the door. She has been waiting anxiously for this stranger who her friend, Bruce, says also has an interesting story about last night. She leads The Tourist into her living room and sits down to take off her skates. She notices that The Tourist seems quite nervous and out of place. “So, you’re looking for someone?” she asks. “Yes”, says The Tourist, and he tells Emily about his conversation with Bruce and his events of the morning with the Hotel Owner.
“Well,” says Emily, “I’ve only ever heard whispers of the name Betty D so I’m not sure if it’s the Betty Davisson you’re looking for. But I have some things to show you”. She gets up and walks down a long corridor with multiple doors on either side. The apartment is old and almost everything is made from old Origen Pine. It seems so much bigger than one would expect from such an old building and is filled with what seems to be an eclectic collection of furniture, wall hangings and décor from different countries and cultures. “Come, this way” Emily says to The Tourist. She stops in front of a door and tells The Tourist that he should keep an open mind. She grins and says, “Your whole world is about to change”. Emily opens the door.
They enter into a room that is well lit but dusty and musty. You can see the dust swirling up and around in the rays of light coming through the large bay windows. There are boxes and files strewn all over and the scene is quite startling. “What is all this stuff?” asks The Tourist. “Well,” says Emily, “some of this is from my travels. I have been around the world 10 times or maybe more documenting everything I have ever seen.” The Tourist is quiet. He is very much in awe of what he sees and is trying to make sense of it all. “Here, this is everything that I have collected from my Aunt so far” says Emily, pointing to a corner of the room filled with boxes, albums, files and trinkets. “My films from last night are still drying but let me show you what I have.”
Emily shows him to a collection of photo albums. She hands him one and opens it to a page with some photos of a woman; the woman is dressed in an old-fashioned wrap around coat, a headscarf and sunglasses. “These are from Chile, I think” says Emily. “Are these from your Aunt?” asks The Tourist. “Yes” says Emily. The Tourist studies the photos intently and nods his head. He turns the page and sees more photos of what seems to be the same woman. “And these?” asks The Tourist. “Oh, I’m not sure” answers Emily. “My Aunt had them in one of her boxes. They could be from Chile, also early 70’s, but Aunty E just can’t remember”. The Tourist picks up another album and pages through it, then another and another. All the albums contain photos of what seem to be the same woman, just with different backgrounds and scenery. Each album seems to be a different place and time, but the woman in them stays the same.
“Now, I can’t guarantee that these are all photographs of THE BETTY D” says Emily with a smile. “All I know is that she is a fascinating Lady”. She takes the first album out again and points out a photo and says “This was taken on the day that my Aunt’s boyfriend, Jose, went missing; in Chile in 1973. He was a musician, you know”. The Tourist’s mind is racing, searching for even the slightest memory of the night before. “This is Aunty E kissing Jose for the last time. And look here”, Emily points to someone in the background, “I think this is Betty D. She’s watching them kissing”.
The Tourist looks around and thinks to himself that this all is a dream world. He remembers that Bruce mentioned something about old music cassettes, so he asks Emily “Do you have any of your Aunt’s old cassettes?” “I did”, replies Emily. ”But I gave them all to my sister, she being the muso in the family.” The Tourist nods and asks if he could meet with Emily’s sister. “Sure”, says Emily. “I think she’s meeting with my Aunty E just now, perhaps you could meet her there?”
The Tourist is delighted to hear this as he really wants to meet this old Aunt of hers. “I’d appreciate that”, he says. Emily gives The Tourist her Aunt’s address and tells him she’ll ask her sister to wait for him at her Aunty E’s house. “You need to go now” she says. “Just please, don’t be too surprised by my Aunt. She is really frail and I’m not sure she will be of much help” explains Emily. “But” she adds, “My sister met this guy last night who is meeting her there as well. He also seems oddly curious about this enigmatic woman as well as my Aunty E’s cassettes and her time in Chile. My sister says it’s like he’s living in the past or something”. The Tourist is quite startled by this. “Who is this Betty Davisson?” he wonders.
“Bye now” Emily says as she shows him to the door and The Tourist heads back down Loxton Road to the bus stop.
