The Fountain – by Olaf Dudek

The sun is low on the horizon as the three men arrive on Signal Hill. The parking lot is nearly full and there are dozens of people settling in with their picnic baskets to watch the sun set. The air is cooler this time of day and the wind has died down. A gentle breeze now moves through the trees.

The Looking Backwards Man seems to not notice the crowd and says to his two companies, “Follow me”.

He leads them through the maze of people to a man standing alone on the far side of the hill. Bruce looks to the Looking Backwards Man who simply nods. The Tourist’s mind is racing, and the palms of his hands are sweaty. He wipes his hands on his pants as he looks to Bruce for answers.

“Don’t worry yourself”, says Bruce as he pats The Tourist in the back.

“I think the only way for you to find out who Betty Davisson is, is to find out where she comes from. Perhaps the best place to start looking is in Chile”, adds the Looking Backwards Man.

“But didn’t you say that was back in 1973?” asks The Tourist.

“Exactly” replies the Looking Backwards Man in a matter of fact way. Indicating to the man who is now standing in front of them he adds, “The Sailor of the Sky will take you there.”

There are so many questions running through The Tourists mind, but he is not given a chance to speak. The man he has been led to simply indicates for him to come over. The Tourist walks over and before he can even open his mouth the stranger begins fitting him with a harness. He is not very gentle as he pulls on straps to tighten them, turns him around and works the clips on the front. Everything is happening so fast and The Tourist is now feeling slightly panicked as he wonders what he has gotten himself into.

The sun is now touching the horizon. The Tourist has been tethered to the stranger and the parasail has been spread out behind them. The only words he hears are “now run” as the stranger gently pushes him forward indicating that he should start running towards the edge of the hill.

“What? No, wait” shouts The Tourist. But it is too late. He and the Sailor of the Sky have been swiftly lifted into the sky. The Tourist looks back towards the hill and sees his friend Bruce and the Looking Backwards Man waving good-bye. He looks down at the dark blue ocean that appears so calm and still. He looks up again and looks towards the horizon as they fly off into the sunset.
