The Tourist finds Bruce on the beach as he is coming in from an invigorating kite-surfing session. “Bruce. Bruce my friend” shouts The Tourist as he waves to Bruce. It is just after 2pm and Bruce realises that he has been out in the waves for close on 3 hours. The Tourist, who seems to be quite rattled, tells Bruce his story of how he was woken up by the Hotel Owner earlier that morning and left with a rather high bill, consisting mostly of Tanqueray Gin. “I asked the Hotel Owner why the bill was so high, and who made all these charges to my room.” “What did she say?” asks Bruce. “Not a whole lot” The Tourist replies, “Just that I was with a woman who said I would cover the bill.” The hairs on the back of Bruce’s neck stand on end as this story is sounding rather familiar. “What woman?” asks Bruce. “I don’t remember”, says The Tourist looking quite perplexed. “The Hotel Owner said her name is Betty Davisson, I think. But who is Betty Davisson?”

Bruce is taken a back when he hears the name and wonders if this could be the Betty D who left him at the bar a few nights ago with big bill???, and the Betty D that Emily had spoken of. He tells The Tourist about the conversation he had earlier with Emily while on the bus ride out to Table View. “Where you in Woodstock last night?” asks Bruce. “I really don’t recall” says The Tourist. Bruce tells The Tourist that Emily is sure she has seen photos of this woman amongst her Aunts old boxes and albums and that this same woman seems to keep cropping up in various other photos in her collection. He recalls that Emily had said she even managed to take a few photos of her own.

“But why would your friend have all of this stuff?” asks The Tourist. Bruce explains that Emily is photojournalist who has travelled the World extensively, and that she an avid archivist of old, historical stories and photographs. He says that Emily has recently received boxes of old photos, cassettes, news clippings, etc. from her Aunt, Erica, who is dying from Brain Cancer. “Emily has been collecting and sorting all of her Aunt’s memorabilia for preservation”, Bruce explains. “She mentioned to me that her Aunt has an incredible story about her time in Chile in the early 70’s. All I know is that Emily has given all of her Aunt’s old music cassettes to her sister, Miss Society, who is quite the musician I might add, and that she is archiving everything else.”

“But who is Betty Davission?” asks The Tourist yet again.

Bruce doesn’t mention his night of missed passion to The Tourist as he does not wish to upset his friend any further, nor does he wish to complicate the issue. He simply says “I think she’s your girl, my friend. You have to find her.”

Bruce insists that The Tourist should go and see Emily and tells him that she lives nearby. He gives The Tourist her address and calls Emily, saying “You won’t believe this, but I have a friend here with me who is desperately looking for a woman who could be the same woman you spoke about earlier.” After a short pause Bruce says, “My friend says her name is Betty Davisson.” “I’m listening” says Emily. “Well, this could be the Betty D that you have heard whispers of” explains Bruce. “Would you mind if he pays you a visit and you can tell him what happened last night and let him have a look at your Aunt’s old photos? Maybe you can help him somehow?” Emily agrees and says that she’s home and will be waiting for his friend. She tells Bruce that she thinks she might have found some clues in the boxes and that this woman might be one of ‘The Disappeared’ from the early 70’s in Chile. “OKAY”, says Bruce, “I’ll tell him to come to you now” and hangs up the phone.

“Maybe I should also go and see this Aunt you talk about” says The Tourist. “Ah, my friend” says Bruce quite solemnly, “Aunt Erica is really not well, and at times she is quite delirious. She usually just sits quietly in her wheelchair, lost in her thoughts. I’m not sure you will get much out of her. Best you ask Emily what she thinks”.

As The Tourist leaves to go and see Emily, Bruce again recalls his encounter with this enigmatic yet seemingly selfish woman who broke a piece of his heart. “The enigmatic Betty D”, he thinks. “I hope my friend finds the answers he’s looking for.”
